She is President of Ecospherics.[1], a research and advisory firm that focuses on climate change, biodiversity loss, energy insecurity, critical minerals, water stress, and human security. Early career
Educated at Williams College[2] and Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs, Burke started her career at the U.S. Office of Technology Assessment in the Energy and Materials Program. After attending Columbia, Burke was selected as a Presidential Management Fellow in the Office of the Secretary of Defense during the Clinton Administration.
Burke then briefly worked at Amnesty International USA before returning to government after 9/11 as the speechwriter for the Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage[3]. When former Pentagon colleagues Michele Flournoy and Kurt Campbell formed the Center for a New American Security in , Burke soon joined them, starting a research program called “Natural Security,” a term she coined and explained in a report[4] as the confluence of natural resources and national security.
Around that time, the late marine ecologist Rafe Sagarin published a book by the same name, which focused on natural defenses in the animal world.
